Aretha Franklin treated for mystery ailment

Legendary singer Aretha Franklin remains under medical supervision after being taken to hospital on Saturday. It has not been revealed what is wrong with the renowned performer, but her publicist says the Queen of Soul is in stable condition. "No other information on her illness is available at this time," said her representative Gwendolyn Quinn.

Aretha, who turns 62 on Thursday, is one of the most revered figures in contemporary music. Over the course of her five-decade career she has won 16 Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award in 1990. She is also responsible for such enduring hits as Respect, Chain Of Fools and Think.

In more recent years duets with the likes of George Michael, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston have kept her at the top of the charts.

Aretha was born the daughter of a Baptist preacher in Memphis, Tennessee. She is said to have learned her gospel style while singing in her father's choir as a child.
