The 76-year-old is the first actress ever to win winning the Praemium Imperiale Global Arts Award in its 22-year history.

Described by veteran Japanese movie critic Yukichi Shinada as "an icon of Italian and global cinema", Sophia wore an elegant blue affair to the ceremony.

The actress beamed as she accepted the award from Prince Hitachi of Japan (pictured), the youngest brother of the reigning Emperor Akihito.
