Watch One Direction cause mayhem on LA streets in carpool karaoke with James Corden

As one of their last engagements before they take a career break in the New Year, One Direction were guests of James Corden in a hilarious 'Carpool' segment. The sketch, which involves being driven around by The Late Late Show host, was quite tricky because fans went wild on spotting the famous four.

The idea is that the British funnyman joins his favourite singers in a karaoke session of their biggest hits – previous guests have included Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber and his wife's personal idol Stevie Wonder who kindly rang her up to croon: "I just called to say James loves you".

James made the singers put on matching T-shirts arguing that's how proper boy bands behave

James' sketch this week started out quite well as he began singing the boys' biggest hits such as What Makes You Beautiful and Story of My Life, even showing off some groovy moves. However, One D fans being what they are it quickly descended into chaos.

At one point a carload of girls pulled up besides them and immediately began screaming and taking selfies with pop stars in the back of the frame.

The segment was full of schoolboy humour and quips

Harry Styles, sitting in the back between Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, while Niall Horan was in the passenger seat, shouted to them: "Drive safely, put your hands on the wheel".

The other comical aspect to the 13-minute segment, shown on Tuesday night, is that James had to act like a schoolmaster, telling the lads to buckle up and fielding requests for food and bathroom breaks.

One Direction Carpool Karaoke

At the weekend One Direction received a star-studded tribute on X Factor ahead of their hiatus.

David Beckham appeared in a video singing along to their tune Steal My Girl, before telling them: "'Five years, you’ve given so much to so many people', he said. 'Above all, you're incredible guys. You need to come back soon!"

Robbie Williams, Wayne Rooney, Danny DeVito, Jack Whitehall, Little Mix, and 5 Seconds Of Summer also appeared in the send-off.

Finally their boss Simon Cowell told them. "'This takes me back five years ago when I met five guys, singing as solo artists, then I never could have predicted what happened next. I know you're gonna take a break, you deserve it"
