The first museum retrospective of David Bowie's career is to be showcased at the V&A gallery.

The show, entitled David Bowie Is, will open next spring. Spanning five decades, the exhibition will showcase the singer's own instruments, sketches, musical scores, diary entries and album artwork, as well as handwritten song lyrics, diary entries, set designs and storyboards.

The star pieces of the exhibition, however, are bound to be the displays of his famous Ziggy Stardust jumpsuits.

Ziggy Stardust, the alter-ego of Bowie, is considered to be one of the most iconic images of the star, as well as a symbolic part of British culture.

V&A describe the show as a dedication to the singer who "helped change the world."

Although he's been keeping a low profile in recent years, the singer has given the museum access to more than 60,000 of his unseen belongings in New York.

However, David, 65, has made clear that he has not been involved in curating the exhibition.

The singer posted on Facebook: "Contrary to recently published reports relating to the annoucement by the V&A of an upcoming David Bowie exhibition, I am not a co-curator and did not participate in any decisions relating to the exhibition."

He added: "The David Bowie Archive gave unprecedented access to the V&A and museum's curators have made all curatorial and design choices."

David Bowie Is  will run from March 23 to July 28, 2013.
