The Twitterverse has been flooded with concerned celebrities offering advice and prayers about Hurricane Sandy – the storm which will hit America's East Coast on Monday. But Lindsay Lohan has told her followers people need to remain calm and not get worked up. "WHY is everyone in SUCH a panic about hurricane (I'm calling it Sally)..? Stop projecting negativity! Think positive and pray for peace," wrote the Mean Girls actress.

Twilight star Ashley Greene didn't seemed too concerned either. "In light of the hurricane coming my way...I bought two pairs of boots, a purse, and a jacket," wrote the 25-year-old about the preparation – or lack of it – she had done. 'Frankenstorm' – as the hurricane been dubbed due to the fact it will hit the East Coast just before Halloween – has left New York City in a state of shutdown. Public transport has been halted and the New York Stock exchange has been closed. Thousands of people have been told to evacuate their homes and evacuation shelters have been set up in 76 schools in anticipation of 85mph winds, rain and snow, which are likely to cause power cuts. The crew of movie ship HMS Bounty were also forced to abandon ship, leaving the vessel of the coast of North Carolina. The ship is is a replica of the original Bounty, famous for its ill-fated 1789 trip to Tahiti and the West Indies, and has appeared in several films, including the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Monday performances of Broadway shows including Chicago, The Lion King, Mary Poppins and Evita have been cancelled. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has also halted all outdoor shooting permits for series including Gossip Girl, The Good Wife, and Blue Bloods. The Tuesday night Big Apple premiere of Keira Knightley's new film Anna Karenina has also been rescheduled.

Saturday Night Live funnyman Jimmy Fallon is insisting that the show must go on, however. "We will be doing the show tomorrow night no matter what," he said, referring to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Also planning to go ahead with taping their programmes were David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel – who is due to be joined by Alicia Keys and Chris Rock.
