'Strictly Come Dancing' waltz to victory at the National Television Awards

Strictly Come Dancing topped the talent show stakes as it secured its first best talent show gong in its broadcasting history. Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly was thrilled to pick up the gong after five years of waiting, beating X Factor to the title for the first time in the show's history. The star opted for red lacy decadence to pick up the gong. "It's Strictly's tenth year and this is the icing on the cake," said the presenter.

 Kimberley Walsh also made an appearance at the ceremony as she made her first solo performance at the event. The singer and Strictly Come Dancing contestant performed a rendition of Randy Crawford's One Day I'll Fly Away at the the awards show, which took place at the 02 in Greenwich. Glittering in a blue strapless gown, the singer wrote on Twitter that she was thrilled that the BBC show had taken the best talent show gong.

"Woo hoo!!!!!!!!!! So happy that Strictly Come Dancing won the NTA's! Such an amazing show to be a part of!" said Kimberley, who came runner-up to gymnast Louis Smith in the last series.

Coronation Street were the big winners of the night, securing two titles at the ceremony. Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs in the soap, honoured late soap veteran Jack Duckworth as they picked up his best serial drama performance prize. Accepting his award, said: "I love you pal."

Speaking backstage, he paid further tribute to Bill, saying the actor would be looking down on him. He said: "I'm sure he is. He'll be having a pint of Guinness for me. His wife asked me to wear his watch tonight so I've got it on. "This is for him, he guided me literally from the start of my career at Coronation Street, he was such a huge, huge influence on my life like a second dad on screen. He'd be laughing at this right now, he used to say, 'none of that bloody acting'." 

ITV entered a winning streak on Wednesday night as, I'm A Celebrity... took the title for the best drama and Geordie presenters Ant and Dec won the best presenting gong for the twelfth time.  The first big surprise of the night saw Merlin star Colin Morgan win the award for the best male drama performance, beating much-fancied rivals Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and Dr Who's Matt Smith to the title. Morgan said he had a "fantastic time" making the programme, which was axed by the BBC last year.
