Announcing that another baby was on the way last October, the 27-year-old said she was "bursting with excitement". Since then Coleen, who is the face of high street brand Littlewoods, has kept her 1million Twitter followers updated with all the details of the pregnancy. Shortly before giving birth, the young mum headed out to watch Beyoncé in concert, wearing a patterned mini dress that showed off her bump in its full glory.

She finished off the outfit with a daringly high pair of heels. It was a rare evening out for Coleen who at one point tweeted some friends: "Where you off girls!! Can't wait for a proper night out soon!! X." She also shared a picture of her baby shower, at which guests dressed in onesies and masks with her face on. The Liverpool lass tweeted: "Had a fantastic night at my surprise baby shower!! Love my friends, even though they are abit crazy haha!! Thanks so much xxx."

The thrilling news will be very welcome in the Rooney household after a difficult year. Coleen's sister Rosie McLoughlin, who suffered from a brain disorder called Rett Syndrome, died in January at the age of 14.

Caring Coleen clearly loves being a mum and has said a big family may well be on the cards. Asked if a few years ago if she wanted to build a career in television, the star ruled it out on the grounds that it would conflict with raising children. "TV is time-consuming and a commitment and I'm a real homebird," said the Liverpool lass.

"I don't like to be away from Wayne and my family too much. I'm not mega ambitious. "I would like to have a family – maybe three or four children and I would be happy to be a full-time mum. I do enjoy my work but I'd be happy when we do have children to just get on with that."

England striker Wayne, also 27, gets a big kick out of fatherhood too. When his wife had Kai in November 2009, he stayed with her throughout the birth and welled up on being handed his son for the first time. The latest addition to the Rooney clan comes five years after their lavish wedding in a medieval Italian monastery.
