Triumphant Andy Murray celebrates historic Wimbledon title

Andy Murray celebrated making history on Sunday by attending the Wimbledon Championships 2013 Winners Ball at the InterContinental Park Lane Hotel in London.The Scottish sports star posed proudly with his arm around girlfriend of seven years Kim Sears after he became the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.

Andy, 26, beat world number one Novak Djokovic in three straight sets to take the title in a game that lasted a grueling three hours in searing temperatures.

He roared in delight before sinking to his knees in disbelief on the court.

Andy's victory ended Britain's 77 year wait for a men's champion. He was willed on by the majority of the 15,000 spectators on Centre Court, with thousands watching on the nearby big screen and millions more tuning in at home.

He could barely believe he had won, saying, "It feels slightly different to last year. Last year was one of the toughest moments of my career, so to manage to win the tournament today…"It was an unbelievably tough match, so many long games."

As his incredible achievement started to sink in, Andy headed to the stands to celebrate with his family, including proud girlfriend Kim Sears and emotional mum Judy, before parading the trophy in front of the ecstatic crowd.

After gathering his thoughts, he later told the BBC's Sue Barker, "It was tough speaking after the match. There are a lot of people who have worked with me over the last 10 or 15 years or so. "I didn't know what to do with myself. The noise levels during the whole match were just incredible." He later tweeted, "Can't believe what's just happened!!!!!!"A number of famous faces had secured sought-after tickets to the final day, and were there to see Andy win the match point.Victoria Beckham, Tana Ramsay, Wayne and Coleen Rooney, Ronnie Wood and his wife Sally, and fellow Scot Gerard Butler, who was joined by Bradley Cooper, were just some of the stars seated in the Royal Box alongside jubilant David Cameron.

"It was fantastic, it was an absolutely brilliant performance, an amazing day for Andy Murray but also an incredible day for British tennis and for Britain," the Prime Minister said after the game. "He was magnificent. In the Royal Box we were jumping up and down… It felt like one of those moments when the whole country is watching and there is just an amazing sportsman who's dedicated his life and had wanted to win so badly, and then just producing a performance that was exquisite."

It is also thought that Dunblane native Andy, who scooped £1.6 million in prize money, will be recommended for a knighthood after ending Britain's long wait for a Wimbledon champion.

The celebrations reached as far as Buckingham Palace with a spokesman confirming that the Queen had sent Andy a private message to congratulate him on his Wimbledon victory.
