In Britain we have over 344 football pitches worth of space on our window sills and there are currently long waiting lists for allotments.
Fiona Reynolds, director general of the National Trust said: “Growing ‘window food’ is an easy way to ensure your vegetables are local and bursting with flavour without breaking the bank. And when it’s pouring with rain outside, there’s no need to brave the weather - you simply open the window and pick what you need.”
Gizzi Erskine, an East London food writer and chef is backing the campaign from her flat by endeavouring to create recipes from the ingredients she grows herself in her window box.
She has managed to grow radishes, beetroots, rainbow chard, spinach and various lettuces along with new potatoes, courgettes, cabbages and a selection of herbs. Click here to check out one of her recipes.
