We’re seeing double! Duchess Kate stepped out on the second day of her royal tour of Sweden with husband Prince William and we couldn’t help but envision Princess Diana in a similar look 28 years ago. Being two of the most fashion-forward women in British royal history, it’s no surprise that the pregnant royal’s style crosses paths with that of her late mother-in-law. On this particular instance, it was the Duchess’s striking houndstooth coat that called to mind a two-piece ensemble worn by her fellow sartorial trailblazer.
Kate’s first outfit of the day on Wednesday (Jan. 31) was a stunning red-and-white Catherine Walker houndstooth coat, which she paired with a burgundy Chanel bag and Tod's pumps. The outfit was notably similar to what Diana wore to church at Sandringham in December 1990. Prince William's mom paired her red-and-white Moschino jacket with a black-and-white skirt, expertly matching the pattern while keeping it fun by changing the hues. She topped the look off with a wide-brimmed red hat.
Princess Diana wore the red, black and white set again in Canada during her October 1991 tour, where she was photographed throwing out her arms for hugs from her sons Princes William and Harry aboard the Britannia yacht in Toronto. The doting mom again recycled the look in March 1992 when she visited the National Hospital For Neurology And Neurosurgery in her role as patron.
This isn’t the first time similarities have been drawn between Kate and Diana’s fashion choices. The 36-year-old has often been seen emulating her husband’s late mother, but no time more prominently than on the day she introduced her first born, Prince George, to the world. The new mom wore a pale-blue polka dot dress as she exited the Lindo Wing with her bundle of joy, and royal fans were quick to compare it with an extremely similar dress Diana wore when Prince William was christened in 1982.
Kate has been showing off a range of daring, yet stylish, looks on her tour of Sweden and Norway this week. On Tuesday evening, Prince William's wife dined in style as she wore a statement floral print gown by Erdem. The gold silk dress, which features a high neck and ruffled sleeves, skimmed over Kate's growing baby bump. It was Kate's third outfit of the day.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Duchess wore a classic bottle green dress and matching coat, both by Catherine Walker. Before that, during a visit to a hockey arena, she wrapped up warm in a Burberry coat, a sweater by Swedish designer Fjallraven, jeans, a bobble hat by Eugenia Kim and $180 boots by Sorel. Kate added a cashmere snood by Brora and faux-fur trimmed gloves by John Lewis.
