Although sombre looks in jet black dominated the initial New York Fashion Week collections, the past few days have brought a brilliant change of hues. Designers from Marc Jacobs to Oscar de La Renta have showed off creations in a rainbow of tones, setting the stage for a colourful Autumn season.

Dynasty diva Joan Collins was among the stars checking out Oscar de La Renta's jewel-toned designs, including embroidered jackets and his signature ball gowns. Meanwhile, models for Marc Jacobs took to the catwalk sporting Sixties mod looks in a palette of tangerine and deep blue as celebrities such as Liv Tyler, P Diddy and Helena Christensen admired the view.

Carolina Herrera also took her cue from fashion classics, presenting a collection with a sophisticated Fifties feel. Both pencil and full skirts could be seen, worn with delicate ribbons tied around the waist. "It's for a very chic woman who wants to feel luxurious without showing it," Herrera says of the ultra-feminine designs, which ranged from soft gold to hot pink.

It was no surprise that colourful Betsey Johnson staged one of the week's most fun-filled shows, creating a fiesta-like atmosphere as she displayed her flouncy Mexican-influenced frocks. A trademark cartwheel from the American designer completed the show, putting the perfect finishing touch to a lively collection.
