Guests at the Dorchester Hotel in London were bowled over by a heady cocktail of Northern brawn and Southern charm on Wednesday evening, when Sean Bean and Charlize Theron set flashbulbs blazing in the upmarket venue.

Sheffield's favourite son was snapped arm in arm with the South African actress, who made a stunning style statement in a three-piece black silk trouser suit, as they arrived for a photocall to promote their new film North Country. The blonde bombshell, looking characteristically radiant at the event, assured reporters she doesn't always manage to look quite so perfect, though.

"I like pretty dresses and I have no problem going to a premiere and having someone make me look nice," she explained. "But I don't look like this when I'm at home. I don't have three people curling my hair and putting 100lbs of make-up on me."

Charlize has received an Oscar nomination for her role as a female worker fighting sexual harassment in the male-dominated world of mining. The performer doesn't rate her chances of taking the gong home, though, as she reckons either Walk The Line star Reese Witherspoon or Desperate Housewives' Felicity Huffman will emerge victorious on the night. "I love Reese and it's definitely her year," she said. "It feels like Felicity Huffman's year too - I think it's between those two."
