Nicole Kidman has married Country music star Keith Urban in a joyful evening ceremony at a gothic cliff-top chapel in Sydney. The intimate service took place on Sunday in the exclusive suburb of Manly.

A vision in a cream, the 39-year-old star had chosen a low-cut, empire-waisted gown by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga, accessorised with pearl-drop earrings. A sheer, floor-length veil covered her face. In her hands she carried a posy of double-petalled white roses. Keith, meanwhile, was the epitome of elegance in a black suit and tie co-ordinated with a white waistcoat and a white rose in his lapel to match the bride's bouquet.

Earlier in the day, her face radiant with joy, Nicole waved animatedly to well-wishers on her way to the church. Normally deeply reserved, the actress hadn't been able to hide her excitement as she swept past a knot of fans on her way to the twilight ceremony in a cream, ribbon-decked limousine.

On Saturday a spokesman for the couple explained that the high-profile pair wanted "a normal wedding with their friends and family".

For the Moulin Rouge star and her Grammy-winning beau "normal" meant Nicole was trailed from her harbour-front mansion by media helicopters, while the 230-strong guest list included many key Hollywood names.

Russell Crowe, X-Men actor Hugh Jackman, director Baz Luhrmann and Naomi Watts were all there to see their friend exchange vows with the singer.

In every other respect the day was full of traditional details. The bride was escorted to the 90-minute service by her father Antony. Meanwhile her sister Antonia led the bridesmaids, who were Nicole's daughter Isabella and Antonia's daughter Lucia. The evening service was conducted by a family friend, Father Paul Coleman, who gave them this advice: "Make time for each other, do romantic things together and never part without kissing."

Ninety minutes after the Oscar-winning actress entered the church, bells rang out signifying the end of the ceremony. The couple later released a statement saying: "We just want to thank everyone in Australia and around the world who have sent us their warm wishes."

For the honeymoon the pair are thought to be on their way to an exclusive hideaway in Fiji, after attending a barbecue thrown by Nicole's family for all the guests.
