Exciting news, Coronation Street fans! The ITV soap is set to surprise viewers with the return of Martin Platt, played by actor Sean Wilson. It's been 13 years since Martin left Weatherfield to start a new life in Liverpool. But he will apparently return for a number of episodes in March as part of the highly-published storyline surrounding his son David (Jack P. Shepherd), who struggles to cope in the aftermath of being drugged and raped by new mechanic Josh. An insider told the Sun that writers felt it was a good time to bring Martin back; although he has been mentioned a lot on the soap since his 2005 exit, he hasn't yet been seen on screen.

Martin Platt (Sean Wilson) is set to return to Coronation Street after 13 years away

Actor Sean, 52, was a mainstay on Coronation Street for more than 20 years, having first appeared as a teenage Martin back in 1985. During his original stint, he was involved in a number of big storylines, including being stalked by nurse Carmel Finnan and his relationship with teenager Katy Harris. In 2005, then-producer Tony Woods confirmed the "difficult decision" to write Martin out of the soap. In response, the actor said at the time: "I've been considering my position for some time now as I feel I have so much to achieve. I'm very much looking forward to working on all kinds of other projects. I feel my time in The Street has provided me with the perfect platform, and now I can concentrate on producing some exciting work elsewhere."

Since leaving the show, Sean has focused on his passion for food. He launched the incredibly successful Saddleworth Cheese Company in 2009, and has also worked as a chef in a number of Michelin-starred restaurants. Asked in August whether he would ever return to the small screen, he told the Mirror: "Very much so. I have an agent and I'm offered things, but I'm fortunate enough to weigh things up as to whether I want to do it. I still speak to one or two from Coronation Street, but they're wrapped up in that world. When you're in that world, you don't have time for a social world."
