From royal-style natural manis to crazy succulent-inspired creations, we can't resist a new nail art trend. And the latest one to hit Instagram is fun, eye-catching and sophisticated at the same time. The hashtag #picassonails is growing on the social media site, as beauty fanatics create mini works of art on their fingertips inspired by the iconic painter. Some are recreating the Spanish artist's works exactly, others are simply taking inspiration from his style and creating mini doodles based on his distinctive shapes and forms.

Colour can be added to the designs, but they also look just as striking in plain black. Their squiggly nature means they're easy to pull off at home too, if you're worried about how steady your hands are.

While lots of people are rocking a full set, they also look just as eye-catching when applied to only a few fingertips. They also work with both natural and bold coloured bases.

If you’re still worried about attempting this look at home – and don't fancy visiting a nail artist – an even simpler trend to try is the rainbow nails look. This involves painting your nails different colours, either randomly or in a pattern. It's a fun throwback to those schooldays when you used to try out every nail colour you could get your hands on but trust us, it still looks chic enough to wear for brunch this weekend.

Or if you prefer something more subtle, take a tip from Princess Eugenie's pristine nails which she showed off when announcing her engagement. They were perfectly shaped and painted in a light neutral shade to ensure nothing detracted from her ring. Blush-toned nails look great on all skin tones and will gave your hands a chic, modern finish that won't clash.

To ensure your manicure looks salon fresh, first ensure your nails are filed and buffed with all traces of lotion or oil removed so the nail polish bonds. Push your cuticles back if needed, as these can cause your nail polish to lift. Start by applying a base coat, then at least two layers of coloured polish. Add a gel-like glossy top coat to keep your colour in place. To protect your new nails, be sure to always wear washing up gloves while doing household chores.
