Coachella’s pipe braid is your new summer hair obsession

We’ll be wearing this at festivals, on the beach… anywhere!

There's no doudt about it, Coachella marks the start of festival season – and as well as the mind-blowing performances (we're talking about Beyoncé, of course) it also brings with it a whole new bunch of fashion and beauty trend-spotting opportunities. Many of the looks sported at Coachella go on to become summer staples, popping up regularly at parties and events throughout the season. Last year it was all about space buns, but for 2018 it appears to be the pipe braid – a clever twist on the French plait that looks super-cool while having the added bonus of disguising three-day-old festival hair.

Hairstylist Nicci Welsh has also created a single version of the braid (@nicciwelsh)

The look was created by hairstylist Nicci Welsh and was spotted at Coachella on the likes of Victoria's Secret model Romee Strijd. It looks complicated but is actually easy to recreate at home, and would also work well for tying up hair at the beach or the gym – anywhere you get hot and sweaty and need your hair off your face. It can be worn as a single or multiple braid, and messy or neat.

In a YouTube video Nicci demonstrates how she creates the braid, starting by taking a section of the hair at the front of the head and combing it smooth. She then works her way down the head looping more sections of hair around the main piece, bit by bit. It looks like the key to keeping things neat is to make sure all the looped-in sections are a similar size on each side. Watch the video for yourself below. Nicci also shared a tutorial on how to achieve her new hair creation on her blog, and many other photographs on her Instagram account.

Another Coachella hairstyle to send us crazy was Rochelle Hume's gorgeous beaded side-sweep, which added just the right amount of boho glam to her beautiful natural curls. It was created by ghd ambassador Patrick Wilson, who explained how he created the look: "I prepped the hair with heat protect spray, then dried with a diffuser to enhance the natural texture. I then used the tip of the ghd Creative Curl Wand to add definition throughout the hair, and created a deep side-parting on one side and sectioned it into five."

He added: "I secured each section with clear elastics, pulling the hair back to form a diamond shape. I added the rose gold beads to cover the elastic, then finished with a spritz of ghd Final Fix Hairspray."
