I have a thing for flowers. Anyone who has ever gone anywhere near my Instagram page will be aware of this – it looks like a florist threw up all over it. I should have some shame, but I just don't. I L.O.V.E F.L.O.W.E.R.S.

With this in mind, you can imagine how delighted I was to see the pictures from the Rodarte SS19 show at New York Fashion Week. I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram (a time-consuming little habit of mine that I'm working on quitting) when the most stunning photos stopped me in my tracks.

Quick disclaimer – despite loving flowers and despite being a fully fledged member of the #basic club, I really don't like flower crowns. I think they're silly and a little bit attention-seeking (sorry, don't know when this got so dark). But Rodarte did them right – oversized and stunningly beautiful, the flowers made for a high-fashion statement and expertly complemented the colourful dresses on show.

The floral styles were dreamt up by Odile Gilbert for TRESemmé, who teamed up with flower designer Joseph Free. "There are no rules," he said backstage, referring to the fact that each model wore a different look.

Something else we need to talk about? The make-up. I think we're all tired of seeing 'no make-up make-up' on the runway and this was exactly the dose of colour we've been waiting for! Bold sweeps of colour across the eyes and lips totally added to the statement look. 

James Kalidos lead the make-up using NARS Cosmetics, and revealed backstage that he was influenced by the Picasso exhibition at the Tate Modern. "The clothes are very frilly and have shape – they reminded me of these Picasso portraits and so we all were just in sync with this modern art feeling," he said. "The look is inspired by strong, abstract shapes – that's why we're using blue, yellow and pink eyeshadow."

As for the application, James added: "I didn't want the edges to be too hard, so I used a rounded Nars shadow brush to press the colour on, and then blended it to the outer corner so it has a gradation effect."

Gotta dash – I need to head to a florist and dig out my most colourful shadow palette to recreate this look pronto.
