How and why to exfoliate: rejuvenate your skin for spring

Share this:

Although winter is finally behind us, the effects of cold temperatures and dreary weather may be here to stay. They can wreak havoc on our skin, leaving blemishes and giving it a dull quality. Now that spring has sprung, it's the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate your skin and give it the boost it needs for that healthy summertime glow.

Regularly exfoliating your face is one of the best ways to keep your skin clear and healthy looking. Exfoliation not only removes dead surface skin cells, but it also tackles the oil that causes pores to plug and lead to problems such as blemishes and acne.

Exfoliation is key to clear and healthy looking skin

As our skin cells rise to the surface, they gradually die and become filled with keratin. These keratinized skin cells are essential because they give our skin its protective quality, however as we age the process of cell turnover slows down, causing the cells to start piling up unevenly on the skin's surface. This can give it a dry and dull appearance.

This is why exfoliating on a regular basis is important, as the process of exfoliation removes those cells that are clinging on, to reveal the fresher, younger skin cells below.

For a radiant glow here’s a step by step guide to exfoliate:

1. Cleanse your face to remove impurities and residue of makeup2. Wet your face and apply an exfoliating cleanser3. Gently massage scrub onto moistened skin using circular motions, avoiding the eye area4. Rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat it dry5. Don’t forget to apply moisturizer for silky smooth skin

Make sure not to over-exfoliate as this in itself can damage your skin cells. Best results are achieved if you do it between three to four times a week.
