The Story:

Bridget Jones is a modern Everywoman, professing a "Girl Power" mantra while harbouring a desire to be all things to all men. The film humorously chronicles a year in the life of Bridget in which she gains 74 pounds but loses 72, has an affair with her boss, goes on a series of bad dates, consumes 5277 cigarettes, and searches for Mr Right.

But while Bridget refers to her settled friends as "smug marrieds", she of course would love to walk down the aisle. And it doesn"t help that her mother, obsessed with her daugther"s floundering love life, repeatedly sets her up on bad dates. But like the Sex And The City girls, Bridget champions her single status: "Singletons should not have to explain themselves all the time but should be an accepted status like geisha girls."

After a dangerous liason with her smarmy London publishing colleague Daniel Cleaver, she pines relentlessly for the handsome bachelor Mark Darcy and, as always in Bridget"s world, madness ensues. Texas native Renée Zellweger adopts a British accent (and two stone) to play the titular anti-heroine in this big screen adaptation of Helen Fielding"s 1996 bestseller.
