Stars shine in Monaco at Red Cross gala

Monaco's Prince Rainier appeared to be in resurgent health at the weekend, when he welcomed film director Woody Allen and soul legend Lionel Richie to his Mediterranean principality. The 81-year-old royal, who underwent heart surgery earlier this year, met the American stars when he hosted the annual Red Cross gala in the Monte Carlo Sporting Club.

The Monegasque royals were out in force for the fundraiser, with Prince Albert, Princess Caroline and her husband Prince Ernst all coming along to show their support. Princess Stephanie, who missed last year's event, was also present, spending most of the evening at her father's side.

Guests paid more than $1,000 each for the honour of attending the glitzy bash. The entertainment was provided by Lionel Richie, who sang a medley of his hits including All Night Long and Hello, before a dazzling fireworks display lit up the sky overhead.

The Monaco Red Cross was first established by Rainier's father, Louis II, in 1948. It raises around $400,000 each year to fight humanitarian crises in countries affected by war and famine.
