The heir to the Norwegian throne, Prince Haakon, has even more reason to celebrate the start of a new year, after being named father of the year by hellomagazine.com readers. In a closely contested battle Haakon was given the nod as this year's "big daddy" according to your votes.

The crown prince's relationship with his eight-year-old stepson Marius and little Ingrid, his first biological child with wife Mette-Marit, who arrived on January 21, 2004, got an overwhelming thumbs up.

In a field of six competitors, the Norwegian royal scooped almost 40 per cent of the votes, edging out runner-up Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

The final rankings in the poll were:

Haakon - 39.3 per cent
Willem-Alexander - 25.3 per cent
Philippe - 11.7 per cent
Abdullah - 10.3 per cent
Joachim - 7.2 per cent
Naruhito - 6.2 per cent

Haakon's relationship with eight-year-old stepson Marius and one-year-old Ingrid earned him almost half of the nearly 4000 votes counted
