As the photo prepared for their Christmas greeting this year shows, the king and queen of Spain are very much like millions of other proud grandparents in wanting to show off the youngest members of their family to friends and acquaintances.

The image, which appears to have been shot in Madrid's Zarzuela Palace, shows King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia with their seven grandchildren. Making up a smiling front row, from left to right, are the Infanta Elena's two children Froilan and Victoria Federica. Alongside them are the offspring of the monarch's younger daughter, the Infanta Cristina - Miguel, Juan Valentin and Pablo Nicolas.

Also included in the festive scene are the two newest members of the family. Cristina's youngest, daughter Irene, perches happily on the lap of her oldest brother, while tiny Leonor, the first child of Crown Prince Felipe and his wife Princess Letizia, snoozes quietly in the Queens arms.

The difference with this royal grouping, however, is that it is a clever photo-montage using elements from pictures taken on other occasions over the last 12 months.

Indeed the image of Irene is one which was part of an official photograph taken earlier this year.

Appropriately for someone whose arrival was so enthusiastically awaited, the heir's daughter also puts in a double appearance, featuring on the greeting card sent out by her mum and dad as well.
