Excited family members have been turning out to be presented to the newest addition to Denmark's royal clan - the son of Prince Joachim and his second wife Marie, who made his entrance into the world in the early hours of Monday morning.

Among the first to show, thoughtfully laden with gifts for the newborn and his mum, were the little one's aunt and uncle, Crown Princess Mary and her husband Frederik.

Proud grandparents Queen Margrethe and her husband Prince Henrik were among the first greet the recent arrival – who's their fifth grandchild and seventh in line to the throne.

"We are very happy," said Henrik, who was accompanied by Joachim's sons by his former marriage to Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, nine-year-old Nikolai and Felix, six.

No less thrilled were Marie's divorced parents Alain Cavallier and Françoise Grassiot, who'd travelled from their respective homes in France and Switzerland to be with their daughter at this joyful time.

As is the custom for the royal family, the child's name will not be revealed until his christening. And his dad discreetly sidestepped enquiries about it when he talked to the press.

One detail Joachim did share was his emotional reaction to the birth. He admitted to shedding a tear, telling journalists he "went through a fantastic moment like any father who watches his child being born".
