Princess Marie looks poised and elegant as her maternity leave ends

Princess Marie of Denmark has been immersed in family commitments recently – most notably the baptism of her baby daughter Athena, now six months. But Prince Joachim's wife returned to working life as she undertook a solo royal engagement this week. The French-born brunette looked poised and elegant at the 65th anniversary of UNESCO in Kronborg Castle, where she delivered a speech.

Marie is patron of the organisation in her adopted homeland, and has carried out her role with enthusiasm since taking on the job in November 2009. Primarily working to champion women's empowerment and education, she is passionate about the organisation, in the past saying she was "proud to be part of UNESCO's work".

Like her sister-in-law Mary, the princess makes balancing royal duties with a large brood seem effortless. She and her husband adore Athena and their three-year-old son, Henrik. Marie is also a loving stepmother to young princes Nikolai, 12, and nine-year-old Felix, Joachim's boys from his previous marriage to Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.
