Princess Charlene pregnancy: Prince Albert doesn't know sex of twins

Keen royal watchers are waiting to find out the sex of Princess Charlene's twins, and they're not the only ones. Prince Albert says he doesn't know the gender of the babies. He told the Monaco Matin newspaper that he'd asked his pregnant wife to keep it a secret.

The 56-year-old sovereign said: "The princess probably knows but she is playing the game. She is keeping the secret as I asked her to.

"You know, one doesn't often have the opportunity to have such pleasant surprises in life, that is why I prefer not to know the babies' gender before the birth." As for the due date, which the Palace had said would be towards the end of the, Albert confirmed that it is "around Christmas". "But as it is a twin pregnancy the birth will surely take place a dozen days early."

The leader of the principality cleared up the issue of sucession. His heir will be whichever twin is born first. ""In the case that one is a girl and the other a boy, it will be the boy."

Albert also has two children from previously relationship – although they are not included in the line of succession. His comments came just before Charlene, 36, made a surprise appearance on the Palace balcony in Monte Carlo for the traditional National Day celebrations on November 19. The former Olympic swimmer seemed well, smiling broadly and waving to the well-wishers below.

Supporters were also rewarded with a tender kiss from the couple, who tend to be reserved about showing signs of affection. It was a happy day for the Monaco royals as Albert's great-nephew Sacha, the son of Andrea Casiraghi and his wife Tatiana, was seen for the first time. The little chap, who will be two next March, has a chubby little face and the blonde hair of the late Princess Grace, his great-grandmother.
