Prince William has only just returned from a family holiday in France with wife Kate and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte – but already his next official engagement has been announced.

The Duke of Cambridge will visit Dusseldorf on 23 August to celebrate 70 years of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Kensington Palace confirmed on Twitter on Tuesday.

North Rhine-Westphalia is the most populous state of Germany. Four of the country's ten biggest cities are located within North Rhine-Westphalia - its capital is Dusseldorf and its biggest city is Cologne.

It was formed back in 1946 as a merger of the northern Rhineland and Westphalia, both formerly parts of Prussia.

During his visit, William will attend events honouring the role of British Forces in Germany, and also celebrating the strong ties between NRW and Britain.

Last week, the Cambridges returned from their short family holiday in France, ahead of William's return to shift duties as an air ambulance pilot.

It's thought the family of four were away for just over seven days; they flew into the south-western airport of Pau-Pyrenees on 26 July on board an £8 million private plane owned by their family friend, the Duke of Westminster.

Very little is known about the private getaway, although French media reported that they spent at least one night at the five star Hotel de Palais on the seafront in Biarritz, where a basic room costs £422 a night.

William and Kate will soon travel much further afield when they head to Canada for an official overseas visit. Although the dates are yet to be confirmed, it's thought that the royals will travel to Canada in September – and royal watchers are hoping that the couple take their two children with them, marking the family of four's very first tour.
