It has been 19 years to the day since Princess Diana was tragically killed in Paris. The beloved royal was just 36-years-old when she died, but in her short life she made such a tremendous impact that almost two decades on, the public continues to remember and pay tribute to 'the people's princess'.

Tributes have been paid to Princess Diana on the 19th anniversary of her death

To commemorate the anniversary of her death on Wednesday, flowers, messages, balloons and photographs were placed outside Kensington Palace by royal fans and well-wishers, who gathered to honour Prince William and Prince Harry's late mother.

Many people also took to Twitter to post touching tributes. "Remembering the people's princess 19 years on," wrote one, while another added: "You may be gone but you are never forgotten. Rest in peace Princess Diana."

"Remembering the kind and generous #PrincessDiana RIP," wrote another fan, alongside a photo of Diana with her sons. "You will never be forgotten."

Ahead of the anniversary date, both Prince William and Prince Harry have been vocal about the pain of losing their mother at such a young age; William was 15, and his younger brother just 12.

Diana was a devoted mother to her two children, Prince William and Prince Harry

Last month, Harry admitted that he wished he had opened up sooner about his mum's death. "I really regret not ever talking about it," the 31-year-old Prince said, as he hosted a BBQ at Kensington Palace in support of the mental health charity Heads Together. "It's ok to suffer, as long as you talk about it."

William, meanwhile, said that he missed his mother "every day" during a visit to a Luton hospice just last week.

Both William and Harry have recently spoken about the death of their mother

"I know how you feel," the Prince told Ben Hines, 14, whose mother Alexandra passed away in June 2015. "I miss my mother every day. It's okay to feel sad."

William also advised Ben, the youngest of three brothers, on how to deal with his loss. "As four boys, you have to talk a lot better, we're not good sharers. It's a classic example of lots of talking needed," he said. "Time makes it easier. I know how you feel, I still miss my mother every day and it's 20 years after she died. The important thing is to talk about it as a family, it's okay to feel sad, it's okay for you to miss her."
