The Duke of Cambridge visited medical staff at St Thomas' Hospital on Thursday, to thank them for their live-saving efforts during the Westminster terror attack. Prince William met with doctors and nurses, who were based just yards from where the incident took place on Westminster Bridge, last Wednesday. A Kensington Palace spokeswoman said: "The Duke wanted to visit privately with some of those who were first to respond to the attacks."

Guy's and St Thomas' Foundation Trust said William arrived at the hospital late on Thursday morning and he spoke with members of the response team, including A&E consultants, junior doctors and security operations manager Carl McIntosh, who raised the alarm to ensure the premises were put into "lockdown" following Khalid Masood's attack. London Ambulance Service chairman Heather Lawrence said: "Our frontline crews and control room staff did an exceptional job in incredibly difficult circumstances. They stayed calm and provided excellent care to those affected and we are very grateful that Prince William has recognised everyone's efforts." The visit follows a similar one by the Duke's father, the Prince of Wales, last week. Charles visited staff at King's College Hospital to thank them for their "marvellous efforts" during the terror attack, which left five people dead, including police officer Keith Palmer.

Several members of the royal family paid tribute following the attacks including the Queen, who released a statement which read: "Following the shocking events in Westminster, Prince Philip and I are sorry that we will not be able to open the New Scotland Yard building as planned today, for very understandable reasons. I look forward to visiting at a later date. My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected by yesterday's awful violence." She continued: "I know I speak for everyone in expressing my enduring thanks and admiration for the members of the Metropolitan Police Service and all who work so selflessly to help and protect others."

The Duchess of Cambridge also spoke about the attack during a speech at the launch of the Out of the Blue film series at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. "Before I begin, I know you would all want to join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to all those sadly affected by yesterday's terrible attack in Westminster," she said. "We will be thinking of all the families, as we discuss the important issues we're here to talk about."
