The world's capital of carnival came to life as Rio de Janeiro entered a collective state of dance, music and fancy dress at the weekend, with elaborate plumed headdresses, teams of dancers and head-to-toe gilded supermodels clad in sequins and body paint decorating the Brazilian city's streets. Considered the world's biggest street party, with origins closely associated with African and Amerindian customs, Rio Carnival centres on the brilliantly colourful parades of the city's samba schools in the Sambadrome.
