A romantic retreat to Majorca

The perfect destination to regain energy before the colder months get here!

With winter practically upon us and temperatures dropping, I realised I needed a romantic break with my partner to refuel and regain energy to get me through the colder months. After a lot of research, I decided Majorca would be the perfect destination, not only because it's still warm, and easy to get to but there are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, as well as fabulous food – and all this without breaking the bank.

Autumn, along with spring, is the best time to visit this gem (or so say the locals!). If what you are looking for is tranquillity, relaxation and a friendly atmosphere, you can enjoy the most authentic part of the island without pressure. Even in the most touristy and crowded areas the influx of people is less than in summer. Although the temperature is not as ideal as in July, you can still go to the beach, sunbathe or even take a dip in the sea (well, if you don’t mind that the water is a bit on the cooler side).

Majorca has stunning beaches throughout the island

For our mini vacation, we opted to stay at one of the luxurious 10 junior suites in OD Port Portals, a boutique hotel located a stone’s throw from Puerto Portals, considered one of the most elegant ports in the Mediterranean and located 20 minutes from the city of Palma. Our reservation included a private service pick up from the airport in a Porsche Cayenne and the added luxury of a smart cabrio car for our use during our stay. Arriving on Friday we got to enjoy the Burguer and Gin afterwork party which takes place on Friday, the best way to start the weekend; good music, finger food and the best gins.

The Balearic Island has been a favourite for the aristocracy and A-listers, and it's no surprise why. Majorca is filled with beautiful beaches with crystal waters, breath-taking scenery, fine gastronomy and a rich cultural heritage.

OD Port Portals is located near Palma

If you love to walk, then Palma is your city. The historic centre of Palma, especially the old part of the city - with its cobblestone streets, charming shops, and quaint restaurants - is a dream walk. Presided over by its imposing and beautiful Cathedral, the city offers a wonderful historical centre: Majorca is not only beaches and parties. Walking down to the cathedral is a beautiful experience, whether it's from the Rambla, the Passeig des Born or the Royal Palace of the Almudaina.

After visiting the city, our trip was devoted to the rest of the island, beginning with our road trip through the Sierra de Tramuntana, a favourite of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. This impressive mountainous system - almost 90 km long - forms the backbone of Majorca, and extends from Andratx in the southwest, to the Cap de Formentor in the extreme north.

One of the most classic tourist attractions the island has to offer are Las Cuevas del Drach, in Porto Cristo (Manacor). The caves hide inside a large underground lake, Lake Martel, considered one of the largest underground lakes in the world.

When to go: You could almost say that any time of the year is perfect for a trip, but don’t forget that in the winter months it does gets cold. The chilliest months are, without a doubt, from January to the end of March, which can be rainy and the temperature drops to 10 degrees.

Where to stay: OD Port Portals in Puerto Portals combines elegant rooms and suites, with flexible personalised service and a good location. Room start from 95 Euros (£81) per night in low season and from 130 Euros (£111) per night in high season including VAT, breakfast and Balearic Tourism Tax.

Top tip: Rent a car, for the best way to see the island. If you want to avoid crowds it is best not to visit in July and August.
