Gentlemen Prefer Blondes star Jane Russell has died aged 89.
Daugher-in-law Elia Waterfield said the actress died on Monday at her home in Santa Maria of a respiratory-related illness.
"She always said I'm going to die in the saddle, I'm not going to sit at home and become an old woman," Elia said.
"And that's exactly what she did, she died in the saddle."
The star had remained active in her local community until illness intervened in recent weeks.
Jane is survived by three adopted children, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Her hand and foot prints are immortalised on the forecourt of Hollywood's legendary Grauman's Chinese Theater.
The three-time married actress was also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
