Daniel Radcliffe: 'Drinking made me a recluse at 20'

Friday February 3, 2012

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has opened up about the extent of his drinking problem.

In the end he said, he didn’t even remember what had happened the night before, who he was with or what he had done.

He said the black outs had him living in such concern with his public behaviour, that he started drinking alone at home.

“I was a recluse at 20. It was pathetic – it wasn’t me.

"I’m a fun, polite person and it turned me into a rude bore.

"For a long time people were saying to me, ‘We think you have a problem’, but in the end I had to come to the realisation myself”, he said recently in an interview.

His Harry Potter co-star Gary Oldman battled alcohol problems himself back in the Nineties and was one of the people who approached him.

Daniel said: “He just said, ‘You can’t keep doing this. You’ve got too much to lose’.

"And that really went in. But not even he could have stopped me alone – I had to stop myself”.

“And stopping has shown me a world of happiness I didn’t think was possible”, he added.
