This time last year Carey Mulligan was a relatively unknown actress. Twelve months later she is the young star everyone is talking about.
This week saw the 24-year-old's reputation reach dazzling new heights when she was named alongside established leading ladies like Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock as a best actress Oscar nominee for her role in An Education.
And upon hearing the happy news, the London-born talent was naturally straight on the phone trying to get in touch with her mum.
Unfortunately for Carey, at that particular moment her college lecturer parent was a bit busy.
"I phoned up and said, 'Mum, mum, mum, I got nominated for an Oscar'," Shia LaBeouf's girlfriend recalled.
"And she said, 'Oh fabulous, I'm just with a student, can you call me back in 45 minutes?'"
Carey also revealed that she was so nervous the night before the Academy Award nods were announced, she couldn't sleep.
"It was really, really nerve-racking," she said. "You can have as many people as you like tell you that you're going to get nominated but it doesn’t feel possible until it happens."
