Phil Collins announces retirement from music

Monday March 7, 2011

He is globally renowned for his string of hit pop songs spanning the last few decades.

But it seems his health problems have proved too much for Phil Collins and the star has decided to take a step back from the music industry.

During his time as drummer for rock band Genesis the 60-year-old suffered from hearing loss as well as a dislocated vertebrae and nerve damage in his hands.

The seven-time Grammy winner has also expressed his disillusionment with the future of the music industry, citing "too much success" as an additional cause for his departure from the celebrity limelight.

Announcing his retirement to FHM he said: "I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that. It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me."

He added: "I do not belong to this world and I think no one will miss me. I see the MTV music Awards and think, 'I cannot be in the same business, I do not belong here.'"
