Cheryl Cole: Her time in the 'X Factor' spotlight

Simon Cowell has finally broken his silence on Cheryl Cole’s axing from US X Factor, as Fox confirm that Nicole Scherzinger will be replacing her on the judging panel.

The music mogul revealed the set-up wasn’t working in the US so they discussed moving her back to the UK version, with Simon making an offer of £2.8 million.

“Knowing Cheryl like I know her, we noticed she was quieter than normal, looked a bit uncomfortable but I put some of this down to nerves,” he said in an interview.

“The overall feeling was that she was slightly out of her comfort zone in America.”

But since Cheryl refused the offer to rejoin the hit show in the UK, most have blamed Simon for the decision.

"The hardest thing to accept is that everyone has painted me as a monster because I embarrassed her, but the truth was I was protecting her," he said.

The 51-year-old said he had received a text from Cheryl saying she felt let down but understood the decision.

"We are close friends. I still hope we are but sometimes when you're that close, when you're making these decisions with someone's life, you have to be certain," he said.
