Dutch Prince Johan Friso buried by avalanche

Friday February 17, 2012

The Netherland's Prince Johan Friso is in a critical condition after being buried under an avalanche in the Austrian town of Lech.

Officials have said the prince - pictured with his wife Princess Mabel - was buried under the snow for about 15 minutes before he was rescued by emergency services.

The 43-year-old was resuscitated at the scene and taken to hospital in Insbruck.

Prince Johan, the second son of Queen Beatrix, was on holiday with several members of the royal family.

He had been skiing in a small group – which did not include the monarch – when the avalanche hit, but no-one else was hurt.
