Can Hollywood's former blue-eyed boy earn redemption?

Jodie Foster has spoken out in support of troubled star Mel Gibson.

Speaking as she promoted their film collaboration The Beaver, the actress said that while the father of eight wasn't "saintly", he was also "incredibly loving and sensitive".

Her comments came after her friend of 15 years, was placed on probation for domestic violence.

The charges stem from his relationship with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva (pictured left).

In the drama about a middle-aged executive who finds he can only communicate through a glove puppet, Mel stars opposite Jodie, who also directed.

The shoot took place as explosive recordings appeared on the internet of the 55-year-old apparently verbally abusing Oksana, the mother of his 17-month-old daughter Lucia.

Despite the controversy, Jodie says: "I knew the minute I met him that I would love him the rest of my life".

"When you love somebody you don't just walk away from them when they are struggling".
