The irrepressible Graham Norton will soon be camping it up in the United States, after landing a £5-million deal to front a chatshow there. The Irish comedian, whose risqué series So Graham Norton has become a huge hit in Britain, has signed a two-year contract with the cable network Comedy Central.

"I'm ecstatically happy," declared the 40-year-old after the news was announced. "Things have really taken off for me over here. Comedy Central seemed a safe place to start in America – I won't look as freakish there as I would have on the bigger networks."

Graham will start work on the new show next year, when his £4-million contract with Channel 4 runs out. But his fans need not worry, because the flamboyant funnyman is expected to continue his work on British TV. Two thousand and four looks set to be a hectic year for Graham, as he is also being lined up to host a movie review show.

The Dublin-born star has already developed a cult following stateside, where his British series is shown on BBC America. He is currently enjoying rave reviews on a stand-up tour of the country.
