Billie Piper has been confirmed as one of the hottest new talents in British acting after landing the lead role in a gritty BBC drama. The former pop star is to appear in a hard-hitting production about life in a home for disadvantaged youngsters.

There were voices of doubt when the young singer won a part in The Canterbury Tales last year. The 21-year-old won rave reviews for her performance, however, and has now been signed up for an even tougher part.

Billie will play a teenager called Bella in the as-yet untitled production, which is to be screened in February. And her troubled character, who struggles to face a life of poverty and adversity, is sure to prove challenging. The production promises to give a warts-and-all insight into the problems faced by teenagers in care.

2004 looks set to be a big year for Billie, as she is also appearing opposite Orlando Bloom in the comedy You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.
