After tears and tantrums in the Big Brother house, TV veteran Sir Jimmy Saville was called in soothe tensions this weekend. The ten celebrities - who include actress Rula Lenska, ex-basketball star Dennis Rodman and Michael Barrymore - had written asking the former presenter to fulfill their wishes, just as he used to do on his Jim'll Fix It show.

As the 79-year-old had promised in an earlier radio interview he popped in twice to comfort the contestants.

"My deal is that I, God willing, will go in on Saturday and have a good time," he said. "I will do my special thing for the housemates, they don't know that yet. Then I'll go to a hotel next door and live off the fat of the land and the next day, God willing, I will go back and spend a day with them.

True to his word, on Sunday Sir Jimmy arrived with his gadget-packed chair ready to grant their wishes. Campaigning MP George Galloway didn't - as expected - wish for world peace, instead he asked for the chance to go to a star-studded awards ceremony. Sir Jimmy couldn't stretch to the Oscars but he did offer two tickets for the Baftas.

The only non-celeb in the house, Chantelle Houghton, 22 - who producers had given the task of convincing the others she was a bona fide pop star - will now get the chance to record her fake track I Want It Right Now.

Meanwhile Michael Barrymore, who wanted to fly a big jet, will get a session in a flight simulator.
