Sheryl and Lance in surprise split

Less than a month after singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow described in detail her wedding plans with legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong, the high-profile couple have stunned well-wishers by announcing their break-up.

A surprise statement released on Friday night said, "After much thought and consideration we have made a very tough decision to split up. We both have a deep love and respect for each other and we ask that everyone respect our privacy during this very difficult time."

Lance, 34, and Sheryl, 43, became engaged in September after two years together. It would have been the first marriage for the Wildflower singer, and the second for the man who famously beat cancer to become one of the world's most outstanding athletes.

The seven-times winner of the Tour de France has three young children by his previous marriage to Kristin Richard: Luke, now six, and four-year-old twins Isabelle and Grace.

In a January interview, Sheryl said that the wedding date had been set for late spring and that Ralph Lauren was designing her dress. "He's also going to do Isabelle and Grace's dresses - they'll both be flower girls," she revealed.

"We want to make sure they (all Lance's children) feel it's a marriage of family," stressed the multiple Grammy winner, adding that they would all be walking down the aisle together.

The popular and high-achieving pair gave no explanation in their joint statement as to the reasons for their sudden break-up.
