Paul McCartney joined friends and family of Beatles guitarist George Harrison in Hollywood this week at a ceremony to unveil a posthumous star on Hollywood Boulevard honouring his late pal, who passed away in 2001, aged 58.

More than a thousand fans, many wearing Beatles T-shirts and holding signs and flowers, had turned out to watch the unveiling, which was attended by George's widow Olivia and his 30-year-old son Dhani as well as celebrity guests including Tom Hanks.

"He was a beautiful, mystical man living in a material world, and he was as funny as the day is long, and just as perplexing," said 60-year-old Olivia of her husband, whose post-Beatles hits will be released in a compilation on June 16. "George, this day is for you."

Though he wasn't scheduled to speak at the event 66-year-old Paul did call out "Thank you very much!" to the crowd gathered near the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After the ceremony he and his American businesswoman girlfriend Nancy Shevell joined Olivia and Dhani for a vegan lunch.
