Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel Trainspotting was a critical and commercial success, and has been named as one of the best British films of all time, garnering itself a Best Screenplay nomination at the Oscars.

Ewan went on to take the role of the poet Christian in Baz Luhrmann’s lush and epic love story Moulin Rouge, in which Ewan sang and fell in love with Nicole Kidman’s terminally-ill courtesan, Satine, before joining the cast of George Lucas’s epic prequel to the Star Wars films as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The 43-year-old has also taken to the stage, where he was nominated for a Laurence Olivier award for his performance as Sky Masterson in Guys And Dolls, which ran for nearly two years.

He later went on to star as Iago in the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Othello with Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Ewan is also known for his charity work, and in 2004 he took a motorcycle journey around the world in order to bring attention to the humanitarian work done by UNICEF.

The show, The Long Way Round, was produced and aired on BBCHe later travelled south from Scotland to South Africa to raise more awareness for the charity, once again filming his adventures for a show called The Long Way Down.
