It's official. Awards season has arrived. The Screen Actors Guild – considered a litmus test for the Golden Globes and the Oscars – has today announced their nominations of the films and actors who will be going for gold in 2013.

Big productions set to be decorated include the film adaptation of Les Miserables, lost-soul romance Silver Linings Playbook and Iranian hostage thriller Argo, which each secured four nominations. All will go head to head for the big prize in the film category – the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture award.  Individual hopes rest on Naomi Watts, whose emotive turn in The Impossible captured the panel's attention. The Kent-born star has been given the nod for her portrayal of a mother caught up in the chaos of the 2004 Tsunami. She will have competition from Jessica Chastain as a CIA analyst pursuing Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty and Marion Cotillard as a woman who finds romance after tragedy in Rust And Bone.

Helen Mirren is flying the flag for Britain as Alfred Hitchcock's strong-willed wife in Hitchcock. Dame Maggie Smith also represents the UK with a supporting actress nod. Maggie – aka Downton Abbey's Lady Grantham – received double recognition with nominations for her role in the hit series and also in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  Most of the boys set to battle it out come from the big films of the year. Bradley Cooper's role in Silver Linings Playbook has earned him a place alongside Les Miserables' Hugh Jackman in the best actor category. Lincoln's Daniel Day Lewis will join them.
