With pop diva Mariah Carey still in hospital after suffering a physical and emotional breakdown, executives at 20th Century Fox have moved the release date of her feature film debut Glitter back nearly a month. The movie tells the semi-autobiographical tale of a young singer trying to make it big in early-Eighties New York and was originally set for release on August 31, but it now seems the film won’t hit US cinemas until September 21.
Meanwhile, Mariah is “resting comfortably” in hospital, and “getting a little stronger each day”, reports her spokesperson Cindi Berger.
The 31-year-old Grammy winner checked herself into Silver Hill, an exclusive Connecticut hospital on July 25 following an outburst at a posh Manhattan hotel after which the top-selling singer’s mother reportedly called the police. Mariah, who elicited concern from friends and family after posting a series of bizarre messages on her website, was said to be suffering from extreme exhaustion after working on two films back-to-back and recording an album.
The Heartbreaker singer had cancelled all public appearances, including both a performance at MTV’s 20th anniversary bash and the all-important press junket for Glitter. Insiders say studio bosses hope the songbird will be well enough to promote the film.
The film’s soundtrack – Mariah’s first album of all original material since 1999’s Rainbow – was scheduled for an August 21 release. There is no word on whether Virgin Records plans to shift that date.
