HILLARY ON THE MOMENT HER HUSBAND CONFESSED HIS INFIDELITY

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton has spoken out about the affair that nearly destroyed her marriage to Bill. In her new book of memoirs, the New York Senator tells of the moment her husband decided to admit his infidelity.

"I could hardly breathe. Gulping for air, I started crying and yelling at him 'What do you mean? What are you saying? Why did you lie to me?'. I was furious and getting more so by the second."

In the face of a Grand Jury grilling the following day, the president decided he would have to confess to his wife. On August 18, 1998, he got up early and spent the morning pacing the floor of their bedroom in the White House. Eventually, he woke Hillary up and told her that there had been an "inappropriate intimacy" between himself and intern Monica Lewinsky.

"He just stood there saying over and over again, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I was trying to protect you and Chelsea'. I was dumbfounded, heart-broken and outraged that I had believed him at all," says Hillary.

Afterwards the family went to Martha's Vineyard, where Bill was left in little doubt about his family's anger. "Buddy, the dog, came along to keep Bill company. He was the only member of our family who was still willing to."

Eventually Hillary decided to forgive her husband, though she says it was far from easy. "The most difficult decisions I have made in my life were to stay married to Bill and run for the Senate of New York," she reveals.

Living History by Hillary Rodham Clinton will hit the shelves on June 9.
