Mayor's wife breaks tradition to snap Queen at royal brolly makers

26 MARCH 2009
It's not every day you get the chance to take a picture of your husband and the Queen. So when the mayor of Tower Hamlets stood beside the British sovereign on a royal visit in London, his wife couldn't resist whipping her camera out to capture the moment on film.

Though nothing is set in stone in terms of royal protocol when it comes to photographing the Queen it's generally accepted that hosts don't take snaps without asking. The 82-year-old monarch didn't seem to mind the impromptu snap, however, as she toured royal umbrella maker Fulton on the Isle of Dogs with the Duke of Edinburgh.

The small family-run business, which has been making brollies for 50 years, was awarded the Royal warrant for supplying Buckingham Palace in January.

It was just one of three East End businesses the royal couple visited on Wednesday to learn about the skills and processes which go into making various products. They also dropped in on a soft drinks manufacturing and distribution plant and the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Britain's oldest manufacturing company, it supplied Big Ben the bell which gives London's famous landmark its name.

While the Queen was fulfilling royal duties in the East End, the Duchess of Cornwall has had to cancel six of hers after coming down with acute bronchitis. Well last week after returning from a ten-day trip to South America with Prince Charles, the Duchess is now poorly. The cancelled events, which were due to take place in the West Country on Thursday and Friday, will be rescheduled for a later date.
