In their first family photo made known to the public, Madeleine and her London-born husband are pictured in the corridor of the hospital. The proud parents beam out to the camera, with Madeleine looking particularly radiant, and in between them their daughter lies sleeping in a car seat, gently covered with a blanket.
Madeleine and Chris are wrapped up in their coats and look ready to head home, to begin their new life as a family of three. With the princess' hair scooped up into a ponytail and a bright smile on her face, 31-year-old Madeleine couldn't have looked happier.
It looks like the Swedish royal couple opted to slip out of the hospital discreetly, but wanted to share their emotional moment with their fans by posting the photo on both Madeline and the Swedish royal family's Facebook pages.
"The princess handled it wonderfully," he told reporters in New York, where the couple are based. "At 10:41 last night we brought a little girl into this world. She looks like her mum which is all I wanted."
"We have ten fingers, ten toes," he added. "And she's got a very strong, nice roar on her. Her eyes are dark brown right now. And her hair is also dark brown right now, but that changes all the time with babies."
Madeleine and Chris will announce the name of their baby, who is fifth-in-line to the throne, after King Carl XVI Gustaf meets the cabinet.
At the time of the birth, the royal palace released a statement saying, "The Office of the Marshal of the Realm is delighted to announce that H.R.H. Princess Madeleine gave birth to a daughter on February 20, 2014 at 10.41 pm local time New York. Both mother and child are in good health."
The new parents decided to welcome their baby in New York, the city they have called home for several years, at the New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. Madeleine works for the nonprofit World Childhood Foundation, founded by her mother, Queen Silvia.
