King Carl Gustaf takes a wintry break in Verbier

As a skiing veteran, Sweden's King Carl Gustaf relishes a challenge when he heads for the slopes. That's probably why the 58-year-old opted for the Swiss resort of Verbier when taking time out from royal duties in Stockholm.

The Scandinavian royal jetted into the Alpine destination this week to spend a few days on the piste. Having twice taken part in the Vasa Ski Race, Carl Gustaf knows a thing or two about tackling a tricky run. And Verbier is considered one of the best resorts for advanced-level skiers.

With over 400 kilometres of pistes it offers something for everyone, but it's difficult black runs are second to none. There's top-class tuition available for practiced skiers, while the nearby Mont Fort glacier means true afionados can take to the slopes all year round.

Small wonder then that the Duke and Duchess of York, along with their daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, are regular visitors. Footie ace David Beckham likewise opted for Verbier when he treated wife Victoria to a birthday break last April.
