Angelina Jolie has bought her new husband Brad Pitt an exquisite timepiece as a wedding gift.

The Maleficent star chose to mark the couple's union with an incredibly rare 1952 Patek Philippe platinum watch, a legendary design by one of the most respected Swiss watchmakers, worth £2million, according to The Mirror.

News of the romantic gesture came to light when a friend reportedly took the chronometer to be given the final touch – a personal inscription.

The timepiece was adorned with the words: "To Roly from Nessa," according to the reports.

Rolly and Nessa are the characters that Angelina and Brad play in By The Sea, the film the duo are currently shooting – and which the actress is also directing – in Malta.

George Farrugia of Dolindo Jewellers, on the neighbouring island of Gozo, was responsable for the personal inscription. He told The Mirror: "I did inscribe the watch, it was for Brad and it was a rare one.

"Oh yes, it was very valuable."

A true professional, George wasn't put off the task by the outstanding value of the item in hand.

"I wasn't nervous about the inscription because I knew I could do the work perfectly," he told the publication.

Brad and Angelina married on 23 August in a private family affair at the couple's magical French home, Château Miraval.

HELLO! magazine was honoured to cover the nuptials in a world exclusive, which revealed the first look at Angelina in her breathtaking wedding gown by Luigi Massi of Atelier Versace, and the veil covered with artwork by her and Brad's children – Maddox, 13, Pax, ten, Zahara, nine, Shiloh, eight, and six-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

Brad and Angelina told HELLO! at the time: "It was important to us that the day was relaxed and full of laughter. It was such a special day to share with our children and a very happy time for our family".
